Perfect for fans of Jackaby who are desperately awaiting the release of its sequel, Beastly Bones, this novella-length story follows the rollicking events of Abigail Rook’s birthday celebration.
Abigail hopes that her birthday will slip by unnoticed and uncelebrated, but her employer, detective of the supernatural R. F. Jackaby, has other plans. Using magical party crackers that teleport the pair to unknown destinations in time and space and a cryptic map that may lead to a forgotten treasure, Jackaby intends to give Abigail what he considers to be the best gift of all--adventure.
Abigail and Jackaby must tame an enormous (and carnivorous) rabbit, defend a castle, and master a dirigible if they want to find the treasure and get back to New Fiddleham alive.

The Map A Jackaby Story eBook William Ritter
Review:Protagonist: Abigail Rook doesn't want a lot of pomp and circumstance for her birthday, but living with the eccentric R. F. Jackaby she should have guessed things would get crazy. I love the character of Abigail as I've mentioned in my review of Jackaby and she's just as great in this book. Because this is a novella there isn't all that much character development the her character, however there is just a touch toward the end which I really enjoyed. I also love her relationship with Jackaby, there's nothing romantic going on and I doubt she believes he thinks of her as much more than an employee, but you can tell that he cares for her and she cares for him.
World-Building: I honestly didn't expect there to be that much world-building in this novella, and there wasn't a ton, but there was certainly more than I had anticipated. I'll be interested to see what details make it into future installments and whether certain characters we meet in this novella will make a reappearance as the series continues. There's no end to the delight that this novella brought, it's much less dark than Jackaby, but still has a real adventurous feel to it that the first book had. There is a mystery of sorts, involving the map this pair acquires, and I was surprised by the outcome.
Predictability: I can honestly say that I was surprised by a great many things in this novella. There was a lot, especially toward the beginning that was very easy to predict, but as this adventure gets going there are great puzzles, riddles, and twists that revealed themselves along the way. While there was nothing too shocking or surprising about these twists they are still extremely enjoyable ones.
Ending: So since this is a standalone story of sorts it wraps up rather nicely. There's a bit of a twist ending but nothing monumental. The very end doesn't foreshadow any new adventure or leave the reader at a cliffhanger. The end is where the sort of subtle message of this novella comes to light which I liked very much.
Rating:
I think if you loved the first book, you'll love this novella, it's free and includes a fantastic and at times hysterical adventure.

The Map A Jackaby Story eBook William Ritter Reviews
Definitely read this short story if you're a fan of Jackaby and are waiting for Beastly Bones!
It's Abigail's birthday, and Jackaby takes her on an adventure where she meets a variety of magical beings within different worlds. With a treasure map in hand, they set out to work together to face unique challenges in a world (or realm?) that's not Abigail's own. Typical birthday present, right?
The story has great character moments, especially ones for Jackaby who is just as hilarious as he was in the first novel. His and Abigail's working relationship really develops, and they learn a bit more about each other.
The Map is free for Prime members and so after reading the blurb and with no monetary risk I decided to read it. Engaging and quirky. Good enough to make me buy and read the other books. Careful, though you might get hooked. (Reminded me in spirit of The Paper Magician series.)
A delightful peek into the "off-duty" adventures of supernatural sleuth R.F. Jackaby and his plucky assistant Abigail. The Map was packed with the humorous and often deadly, fantastical creatures that author William Ritter so effortlessly brings to life. If you are a fan of Jackaby and Abigail this will make a welcome addition to your collection. If you have yet to experience their particular brand of crime solving, I would heartily recommend this YA series.
This short novella is a great addition to the Jackaby series! It is full of wonder and delight and many magical beings. If you haven’t read an Jackaby stories this is a fine one to start with and if you have then you’ll definitely want to read this one.
The Map (Jackaby 1.5) is a short story interlude occurring between Jackaby and Beastly Bones. It provides some great insight into Jackaby, especially that he isn't quite as eccentric as we are led to believe. It is both a cute and a sweet story revolving around a treasure map birthday present and a little bit of adventuring. As with the first and second novel, it is inventive, quirky, and quite fun. There's just enough story to make it worth it - not too much and not too little.
Leave it to R.F. Jackaby to turn an ordinary custom like birthday presents into something dangerous, exciting, and potentially deadly. When Abigail's birthday arrives, her employer decides to take her and visit the Zandermacht. Although he tells her it is a simple trip to the market, nothing around Jackaby is ever simple. He actually takes her to a market full of vendors, customers, and goods that are all a bit outside the human realm. The simple trip then becomes a treasure hunt following and old map he has purchased. Giant hares, cursed vegetable gardens, goblins...what a birthday!
This short story takes place between Jackaby and Beastly Bones and was absolutely delightful. Abigail Rook is hoping that her birthday will escape the notice of her employer, R.F. Jackaby, but he has decided to help her celebrate in a spectacular way. He takes her to a mystical market, where she notices a treasure map but declines it as a present. Of course Jackaby knows better and presents it to her. Using magical party crackers that teleport them to whatever destination they wish, they follow the map where hopefully they will reach its buried treasure conclusion. Of course, it’s an adventure, which is Jackaby’s objective, and that is the best gift ever for Abigail. I loved all of the different challenges the pair encounter, and of course, each of them has unique talents that aid in the quest. This is such a wonderfully fantastic world, I hope we get many more stories for Abigail and Jackaby.
